Bob (Robert William) Edgar was born in Philadelphia, PA on May 28, 1943.  He attended public schools in Springfield, PA, earned a B.A. at Lycoming College (1965), a Master of Divinity at Drew University Theological School (1968) and a certificate in pastoral psychiatry from Hahnemann Medical College and Hospital (1969).  He was ordained a United Methodist Minister in 1968 and served as United Protestant Chaplain at Drexel University (1971-74).
He was elected as a Democrat to the Ninety-fourth and five succeeding Congresses (January 3, 1975-January 3 1987).  He was not a candidate for reelection in 1986, but was an unsuccessful candidate for the US Senate.
In 2000, Edgar began a seven-year term as chief executive of the National Council of the Churches of Christ in the USA

He served as president and CEO of
Common Cause
, a nonpartisan government watchdog organization, from May 2007 until his death.
Edgar
died suddenly at his home on April 23, 2013, following a heart attack.
