    Description
For sale is an original historical document, 2 acts of the Third Congress of the United States of America begun in Philadelphia on December 2, 1793, and dated May 9th, 1794.
The first act provides for the remission of duties on eleven hogsheads of coffee destroyed by a fire in Baltimore.
The second act provides for the defense of the port and harbor of the city of Annapolis (later the home of the US Naval Academy), and authorizes the President of the United States, George Washington at that time, to employ a garrison there, provide arms, and receive from the State of Maryland a cession of lands on which such fortifications may be built.
The acts are signed twice in print by George Washington (First President of the United States), John Adams (First Vice President of the United States, First President of the US Senate and Second President of the United States) and Frederick Augustus Muhlenberg (First Speaker of the US House of Representatives).
The acts are signed once in hand by Edmund Jennings Randolph, who at that time was fulfilling his duties as the second Secretary of State of the United States from 1794-1795, having just replaced Thomas Jefferson who had resigned the position. He had previously served as the first Attorney General in US history and as the 7th Governor of the Commonwealth of Virginia.
The document has been taped to another sheet for presentation since it was obtained at auction in 1978, via a donation from the Abraham Lincoln Bookshop.  The document features a tear at the top, as shown in the provided photos, that measures approximately 3 3/8 inches from the top of the document to the bottom of the tear.  Aside from the obvious signs of aging visible in the photos, and the folds likely dating back to at or near the time of its creation, the document is in wonderful condition and presents beautifully.
The original documentation shown in the photos from its sale at auction in 1978 will be provided and shipped inside the frame shown, behind the document itself.
A very rare and very desirable piece of early American history for collectors of historical documents, Naval or military memorabilia and/or political paraphernalia.
