Description: This document places in the US House of Representatives record an 1842 resolution by the Wiskonsan Legislative Assembly and a message from Wiskonsan Territory Governor Doty asking for resolution of the boundary between Michigan and Wiskonsan. In an 1836 US Act establishing the boundaries of Michigan, part of the boundary was described as being "thence through the middle of the main channel of the said river Montreal, to the middle of the Lake of the Desert." As this 1842 document points out, in this 1836 description, the western boundary of Michigan "is an impracticable line, there being no such natural boundary as is therein described, and that it is, in consequence, become necessary to designate a new line." Despite the Wiskonsan's plea, it appears that this border was not settled until a 1926 US Supreme Court decision awarded a sliver of land to Wisconsin, sometimes known as the Wisconsin Wedge.
