Congressional Directory Book Pocket Size 1914 No Cover Williams Jennings Bryan
This is a 1914 Congressional Directory book (vest pocket size) for the Sixty-Third Congress Second Session (corrected to March 31 1914), published by the Washington Government Printing Office.  As you can see, the cover is now missing and there is writing within from original owner. The book measures 5 1/4" x 2 3/4" x 1/2" thick. The name of original owner is written in book in two place (John Adkisson, Lebanon School). There are some notes and underscores inside on text. On page 187 is the name of the famous William Jennings Bryan. His name is crossed out and the name, " Robert Lansing" is written in. William Jennings Bryan resigned in this year and his successor was Lansing. This may be the last time his name appears in a Congressional Directory. He resigned to President Wilson because he thought the President was too harsh after Wilson send a note of protest to Germany with a veiled threat of war (in response to the sinking of Lusitania ship by German U-Boat). Bryan was a Presidential nominee in 1896, 1900, 1908 and was born in Salem, Illinois. He was the best known orator and lecturer of the Progressive Era and died in 1925. He was also the 41st United States Secretary of State. This little book is packed with the names of each States representatives and where they can be located and various committees they were on. There is also a list of Newspaper men of the day as well as list of hotels and clubs and other social establishments where politicians could be found. This book dates to just before WWI and is a wonderful time capsule. It's a bit rough to look at... but totally readable. I have photographed a few sample pages for your examination. This book came from the estate of 90 year old woman in Southern Illinois.
